The Student visa process

Ten steps from course selection to ImmiAccount.

A CoE confirms enrolment evidence. It does not guarantee that a Student visa will be granted.

  1. Select a CRICOS registered course and provider

Use CRICOS to confirm the intended course and education provider are registered for overseas students.

Complete the provider steps required before a Confirmation of Enrolment can be issued.

  5. Obtain the Confirmation of Enrolment

Prepare the CoE for each intended course as required by the application instructions.

  6. Arrange Overseas Student Health Cover

Arrange OSHC for the required period or confirm the exemption category that applies to you.

Provide the evidence required by the current Student visa instructions and your circumstances.

  8. Prepare Genuine Student responses

Answer the GS questions in English using real circumstances and supporting documents.

  10. Complete additional requests

Respond to any health, character, biometrics or document request that applies to the application.

Genuine Student requirement

Write the application from your actual circumstances.

The GS requirement is assessed through your current circumstances, proposed study and supporting evidence. Future skilled migration intentions do not automatically count against an applicant, but the responses must be truthful.

01 / Circumstances

Your current circumstances

Explain your current residence, family and community context, employment and economic circumstances.

02 / Course choice

Why this course and provider

Connect the course and provider to your previous study, work history and stated academic or professional plans.

03 / Understanding

Understanding the proposed study

Show that you have researched course structure, location, study expectations and the provider's offer.

04 / Value

Value of the course

Describe the knowledge or qualification sought and its relationship to future employment prospects.

05 / Education

Previous education

Set out qualifications, dates and institutions, including any change in academic direction.

06 / Employment

Current employment

Describe your role, employer, duties and career position using matching evidence.

07 / Finances

Economic circumstances

Explain who will fund tuition and living costs, the source of funds and available evidence.

08 / History

Immigration history

Disclose relevant travel, visa applications, refusals or cancellations with supporting documents.

Do not copy a model answer or create facts that are not part of your circumstances. GS responses should be written in your own words and supported by evidence.

After an Australian qualification

Study is not a guarantee of permanent residence.

A later skilled or employer sponsored application depends on the visa criteria in force at that time, including occupation, skills assessment, English evidence, registration, employment, nomination or sponsorship.

01 / Temporary Graduate

Subclass 485 may be relevant

Consider the Temporary Graduate visa only as a post study immigration option. Eligibility depends on the relevant stream and current requirements.

02 / Skilled migration

Occupation and assessment

An Australian qualification may support a later case, but the nominated occupation and assessing authority still need review.

03 / Sponsorship

SkillSelect or an employer

Possible later options may include SkillSelect, state nomination or employer sponsorship, subject to the criteria available then.

Official sources

Use CRICOS and Home Affairs for the current instructions.

Course registration and visa requirements are separate checks. Read both before committing to an application.
